Cryogenic spill protection system

A cryogenic spill occurs when extremely cold liquids, such as LNG (Liquid Natural Gas), are released and come into contact with warm surfaces, triggering rapid vaporization and the release of flammable gases. The FOAMGLAS® Cryo Spill™ System is a passive response solution that leverages the properties of FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation to help create a permanent, weather-resistant insulating barrier inside a containment pit.

In the event of a cryogenic liquid spill, the FOAMGLAS® CryoSpill™ System helps reduce the rate of vaporization and provides thermal shock protection to concrete and steel. Unmitigated spills expose extremely cold liquid to heat sources such as warm air, solar radiation, and heated ground surfaces, causing rapid boil-off and the formation of flammable vapor clouds that pose serious fire hazards. By insulating heat entry points, including ground and concrete surfaces, the CryoSpill™ System slows vaporization and mitigates thermal shock, making it a robust cryogenic safety system.

The FOAMGLAS® Cryo Spill™ System addresses two of these challenges by minimizing heat transfer into the containment pit, helping prevent thermal shock to concrete and steel while reducing vapor generation from cryogenic liquids. The system’s cellular glass insulation maintains stable surface temperatures and limits boil-off, supporting controlled spill conditions.

The Cryo Spill™ System is also fully compatible with the FOAMGLAS® PFS™ Gen 2 System. While each system is designed to operate independently, integrated operation delivers layered protection and can help mitigate LNG pool fires.

System Overview

Owens Corning has developed two passive fire protection systems to help the LNG industry reduce the dangers of pool fires in new or existing facilities, one called the FOAMGLAS® PFS™ (Pool Fire Suppression) System – Generation 2 and the other called the FOAMGLAS® Cryo Spill™ System.

Cryo Spill’s system helps provide thermal shock protection for the basin’s concrete and steel rebar while simultaneously reducing LNG vaporisation.

The PFS Gen 2 system provides reduction of LNG vaporisation during a spill, as well as reduction in radiant heat during a pool fire event.

While each system is designed to operate independently, using them together enhances overall performance and safety. When integrated, they provide a robust and comprehensive solution for managing cryogenic spills and fire suppression, offering layered protection across multiple risk scenarios.
