VentSure® 4-Foot Strip Heat & Moisture Ridge Vents Installation Instructions | Owens Corning Roofing

VentSure® 4-Foot Strip Ridge Vents are designed for roofs with slopes of 3/12 to 16/12. Intake at the eave vents should be equal to or exceed that of the ridge vent being installed.

Important Notes

  1. Before applying vent to architectural shingles, leave underlayment long at ridge and fold back under vent or caulk between low areas of shingle and flange of vent, making sure you don’t plug drain holes. This will help prevent wind-driven rain and snow from entering the attic.
  2. See instructions for cutting slot.
  3. For structures with different ridge heights, be sure to vent the higher ridge provided there is an opening that connects the two attic spaces. It is also acceptable to vent lower ridges with dormers.
  4. For truss roof framing, cut a 1-inch slot on each side of the ridge starting a minimum of 6-inches from the rake edge of the roof. For conventionally framed roofs with a center ridge board, cut a 1-inch wide slot beyond the ridge board starting a minimum of 6 inches from the rake edge of the roof. Combined width of slots and ridge board should not exceed 3½ inches.
  5. During cold weather installation, leave a 1/8-inch gap between ridge vent ends to allow for expansion in hot weather conditions.
  6. For best appearance, run VentSure® Ridge Vent from end to end to give the roof a more attractive appearance.
  7. The shingle nail line on the vent is a common fastening location for hip and ridge shingles that require 2 fasteners and is not a limitation on fastener placement. Install all hip and ridge shingles over top of the vent according to manufacturer’s instructions, keeping fasteners at least 1/2-inch inside external baffles.

Installation Instructions

Step 1

Using a chalk line, mark out 1 inch on both sides of the ridge as a guide for cutting a slot in the top of the ridge. See Fig. 1.

Cut slot using a circular saw with the blade set at a depth to cut through the wood sheathing only. See Fig. 2.

NOTE: Start and end the cut 6-inches from the edge of the roof. Remove the sheathing debris from slot.

Center the vent over the opening that has been cut in the ridge, ensuring the vent sits flat on the roof. Start with the alignment tabs facing the rake end of the roof. For cold weather installation, leave a gap no bigger than 1/8-inch to allow for expansion. Gaps larger than 1/8-inch could lead to rain and snow entering the attic. See Fig. 3.

As you install the vents, ensure each vent is aligned, then nail in place using the nail holes marked on each vent. See Fig. 4.

Using a utility knife, cut the final piece to a length long enough so that it is flush with the edge of the roof. Connect making sure that the built-in end caps are exposed and nail in place. See Fig. 5.

Nail hip and ridge shingles over the vent using nails long enough to meet the penetration requirements of the local building code and shingle manufacturer or use nails provided with the VentSure ridge vent. See Fig. 6.

Instructions for Cutting Slots


Hip and Gable Roofs

Cut slot 1-inch on both sides of ridge to within 6-inches of each end wall or hip intersection. See Fig. 7.


Chimneys

Cut slots 12-inches from chimney. Run ridge vent from end of roof to butt against chimney. See Fig. 8.


“T” & “L” Roof

Saw slots to within 12-inches of ridge intersection points as shown. Install ridge vent completely across ridge on long side and butt ridge vent on the short run against the side of the long run. See Fig. 9.

NOTE: To prevent leakage and preserve aesthetic roof line, always leave at least 6-inches between ridge slot and end of ridge.

NOTE: The net-free area of soffit ventilation should always be at least equal to or more than the net-free area of the ridge ventilation.
