Technical Information

Fire Protection Evaluation

There are two approaches to protecting against cascading events.

Passive Fire Mitigation: the mitigation is installed prior to operation and is always "available"; it does not require activation. Passive fire mitigation that is properly maintained is considered to have zero probability of failure on demand, which means that regulators always give credit for the presence of passive systems.

Active Fire Mitigation: there is always a chance they may fail to activate due to lack of detection or system malfunction (probability of failure on demand).
