Decades of leadership in perimeter fire containment systems for curtain wall construction
From its inception, Thermafiber®* has been the pioneer of perimeter fire containment and dedicated to innovating and improving fire resistance of mineral wool insulation. In fact, Thermafiber helped Underwriters Laboratories (UL®) develop the first test standard for perimeter fire containment systems, enabling these systems to be evaluated and listed. The first UL® tested and listed assembly was completed in 1997. Now, almost thirty years later, the Thermafiber Insolutions® Team provides perimeter fire containment systems for curtain wall construction to fit the unique design needs of today’s innovative commercial buildings, backed by decades of testing and proven performance.

Our Most Common Perimeter Fire Containment Systems
Thermafiber® Impasse® Zero Spandrel Perimeter Fire Containment System (TFI/BPF 120-15 and 180-07)
The Thermafiber® Impasse® Zero Spandrel System is a patent-pending solution engineered for zero spandrel curtain wall designs. This system pairs heavy-duty Thermafiber® Impasse® 2.0 Hangers with high-density FireSpan® mineral wool insulation to simplify installation and eliminate the need for back pans.
- Available with 2- and 3-hour F ratings.
- Supports various curtain wall anchors and shadowbox designs.
- Reduces penetrations in framing and eliminates bulky back pans.
- For system-specific documentation and resources, visit the TFI/BPF 120-15 and TFI/BPF 180-07 Perimeter Fire Containment System listings.
Thermafiber® Impasse® No Backer Bar™ Aluminum-Framed Curtain Wall Perimeter Fire Containment System (CW-D-1014 through 1017)
This patented Impasse® system features a no-backer bar design, allowing the vision glass to extend down to the top of the floor slab for a cleaner, more open aesthetic.
- 2-hour F rating with fewer mechanical fasteners required.
- No backer or reinforcement member is required when the window sill transom is used in conjunction with the Thermafiber® Horizontal Impasse® Hangers.
- Offers labor-saving advantages compared to traditional systems.
- For system-specific documentation and resources, visit the CW-D-1014, CW-D-1015, CW-D-1016, and CW-D-1017 listings.
Thermafiber® Impasse® No Backer Bar™ with FireLedge® Aluminum-Framed Curtain Wall Perimeter Fire Containment System (CW-D-1012 through 1013)
This system combines the no-backer-bar design of the patented Thermafiber® Impasse® platform with the added performance of Thermafiber® FireLedge®, allowing for simplified installation and improved insulation alignment using Thermafiber® mineral wool Safing insulation.
- Available with 2- and 3-hour F ratings.
- Designed to accommodate vision glass down to the floor slab without added reinforcement.
- For system-specific documentation and resources, visit the CW-D-1012 and CW-D-1013 listings

Why Engineering Judgments Matter for Perimeter Fire Containment Systems
No two buildings are exactly alike. Each building has unique design elements and functionality. Even with over 200 tested perimeter fire containment systems in the UL and Intertek directories, most designs require unique adaptations. It’s rare for an off-the-shelf solution to match a project’s exact conditions. That’s where engineering judgments come in. These documents guide fire containment strategies and encompass the entire construction process, from design through inspection. Request a free engineering judgment today.
