Nailing Zone Performance | Owens Corning Roofing Skip to Main Content

WHY THE NAIL ZONE MATTERS

The nail zone is the part of a shingle where nails are placed during installation. Nailing zone performance is vital because it helps determine how a roof stands up to wind, water, and time. Owens Corning® Oakridge® and duration® Series Shingles outperform the competition in the nailing zone. Knowing where to nail a shingle is key to proper installation, which makes this zone the spot that matters the most for nailing roof shingles. When our architectural shingles are compared to competitive shingles with wide, single-layer nailing zones, the difference is clear. Through rigorous testing, our shingles are engineered to help resist high winds, reduce the risk of water infiltration, and to help hold layers firmly in place.

PREMIUM PROTECTION

OAKRIDGE® SHINGLES

With Full Common Bond Nail Zone For Double Layer Protection

A full double layer in the nail zone gives Oakridge® shingles greater integrity and better holding power compared to shingles with wide single layer nail zones. In head-to-head testing, Oakridge® shingles outperformed single-layer alternatives in the nail zone, delivering reliable strength where it counts.

ULTIMATE PROTECTION

duration® SERIES SHINGLES

With SureNail Technology® with Triple Layer Protection®

For the ultimate in protection, duration® Series with SureNail® Technology provides a unique triple layer of reinforcement in the nailing zone when the patented tough, engineered fabric overlays the common bond of the shingle layers, offering outstanding fastener holding power.

Put the Rest to the Test

Owens Corning® architectural shingles create greater integrity and better holding power on the roof to protect your home. When our Oakridge® Shingles and duration® Series Shingles go head-to-head with competing products in three critical tests, the results are impressive. Our products outperform in resistance to nail pull-through, nail blow-through, and delamination.

Nail Pull-Through: When it comes to nailing roof shingles, you want to know that the shingles you've chosen are designed to help stay put in high winds. Resistance to nail pull-through means the shingle holds firm around the nail instead of tearing or pulling loose when wind pressure increases.

Nail Blow-Through: When nailing architectural shingles, if the nails are driven too hard during installation, they can punch through the shingle's surface too far and leave a hole. Overdriven nails can provide a path for water infiltration and reduce the overall holding power of the shingles. Having a shingle with better resistance to nail blow-through and helps deliver more reliable performance square after square.

Delamination:The delamination of shingles occurs when the bonded layers of a shingle start to separate or peel apart over time. Keeping the shingle layers from separating is critically important from an aesthetic and performance standpoint.
