Spray Foam Density Calculator
- The displacement method is only suitable for medium density (closed cell) products.
- The caliper method can be used for both closed and open cell
What you need
1000 ml graduated cylinder
Gram scale
Sharp knife to prepare a sample
Collect a Sample
- Sample should weigh 5.5 - 10.0g
- Trim to easily fit the graduated cylinder
- Should not have any internal or external “skins” or knit lines
Instructions
- Prepare a 5.5-10 gram sample with no skins. It should fit easily within the graduated cylinder
- Weigh the sample and enter the value.
- Fill the cylinder 2/3 with water and enter the initial water level.
- Completely submerge the sample under the water level and enter the submerged value.

THIS TOOL PROVIDES ESTIMATES ONLY AND IS INTENDED FOR USER CONVENIENCE. NP/OC makes no representations and is not responsible for implications of product performance or yield promises based on tool outputs. For actual measurements, standardized test methods like ASTM D1622 are the appropriate means of quantifying foam density.
| Product | Target Density (lbs/cu.ft.)* |
| 0.5lb open cell | <0.55 |
| NT Light | <0.45 |
| NT 2.0 HFO | 1.85-2.15 |
| NT Zero | 1.6-1.9 |
*Approximate values, if needed run multiple samples and average for better estimations.
