Storage tanks are used to hold a variety of organic liquids or gases including raw materials, intermediates, final products or usable byproducts. Each year, large amounts of energy is wasted due to hot storage tanks not having proper insulation.

Tanks can vary in design and equipment, the type of construction and the storage temperature often depends on the properties of the products that are going to be stored in them. With such a broad variety of chemicals, a detailed assessment is necessary to ensure that all aspects are taken into consideration to ensure that a product can be stored and handled in a safe and efficient manner.

Without a reliable insulation system, storage tanks can lose energy, money and put employees at risk. The growing worldwide demand for chemical products and proper storage and handling makes energy efficiency and safety of storage tanks even more important.

Storage tanks and columns

A well performing insulation system for your tank walls and roof will save energy, lower maintenance costs and improve worker safety around hot storage tanks. The temperature difference between the outside temperature and the temperature inside of the tank can differ quite a lot making the tank walls and roof of a hot storage tank are areas that are susceptible for heat transfer and energy loss. Therefore it is imperative to have a good thermal insulation system installed to reduce energy loss and to make sure the energy costs are kept at a minimum.

The impermeable closed cell nature of FOAMGLAS® insulation will prevent any ingress of moisture and possible Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) dangers that could mitigate deterioration of your storage tanks. Spills and leakages of hazardous substances or fumes do not affect the system as a FOAMGLAS® tank base system will protect against chemical attack from the tank content should a leakage occur.

Typical configuration for above ambient tank wall and roof applications:

  • Single or double layer system of FOAMGLAS® insulation.
  • The insulation system shall be fully bonded to the substrate with PC® adhesive appropriate for the application conditions.
  • Coating or cladding appropriate for the environmental conditions shall be installed to protect insulation system from weather and mechanical damage.
